At iHeart Dental, we meet many patients who are ready for a fresh start with their smile. R.W. is one of them. His story is about more than just fixing teeth; it’s about getting his health, comfort, and confidence back.
When R.W. came to see us, he was tired of the pain and frustration that came with his failing teeth. Like many people, he wanted something that felt secure and natural, not a removable denture he’d have to take in and out every day. That’s what led him to choose All-on-X dental implants.

Before All-on-X
Why Did R.W. Need All-on-X Dental Implants?
When R.W. first walked into our office in November 2021, his words were simple: “My teeth have been falling out for about a year, but now it’s starting to hurt.”
He hadn’t had a cleaning in years, and a dental exam confirmed what he already feared. He had severe gum disease, bone loss, broken teeth, and infections. We talked about traditional dentures, but R.W. knew that wasn’t what he wanted. He wanted a solution that would stay in place and let him feel like himself again. That’s when we discussed All-on-X dental implants for both his upper and lower teeth.
How Do We Plan an All-on-X Case?
Big cases like R.W.’s start with careful planning. We took photos, 3D scans, and a CBCT scan to see everything in detail. We then communicated with our prosthodontics lab to help design and plan these advanced implant cases.
Think of it like building a house. You need blueprints, specialists, and the right materials. Together, we created a step-by-step plan to give R.W. the best chance at a beautiful and strong, lasting smile.
What Were the Challenges in Richard’s Case?
RW’s case wasn’t simple. Here are a few of the hurdles we worked through:
- Double arches. Replacing both the upper and lower teeth is a big procedure, so we split the surgeries into two visits, one week apart.
- Bone reduction. To make room for the new teeth, we had to reduce some bone in both arches, which we had planned ahead of time.
- Precision guides. Using 3D-printed surgical guides helped us make sure everything went exactly where it needed to.
What Is the Surgery and Recovery Process Like?
For Richard, surgery was done in two steps: upper first, then lower. After surgery, he had some important rules to follow:
- No chewing until the implants had time to heal
- Antibacterial rinses to keep everything clean
- Bite checks and adjustments to make sure his bite stayed balanced
He came back the very next business day, then weekly, then monthly. Each visit gave us a chance to fine-tune his bite and make sure healing was on track.
We started him off with PMMA acrylic teeth, which look natural but are designed to be temporary. Once we knew everything fit and felt right, we transitioned him to his final zirconia prosthesis—a permanent solution built for strength and beauty.
What Results Did RW Achieve?
RW’s journey was smooth from start to finish, and a big reason for that was his commitment to following instructions. He gave his implants the time they needed to heal, and the results speak for themselves.
- His oral health improved once his failing teeth were removed
- He regained the ability to eat and smile comfortably
- His confidence grew, and he felt like himself again
Today, RW comes in every six months for routine cleanings, and his smile continues to look and function beautifully.
