Every smile has a story, and John’s is one we’ll never forget. At 59, John was a healthy, semi-retired widower with one grown son. He had always been fairly private about his life, but when it came to his teeth, he was ready to find a solution that worked.

John was referred to us by another local dentist because he was interested in implant-supported dentures.  John came to us with all his upper teeth missing, and he had never worn an upper denture. On the bottom, a few teeth remained, but most of them had failing root canals and infection present. He wanted something stable, comfortable, and lasting.

Before Full Mouth Restoration

    Full Mouth Treatment Options Discussed

When John sat down with us, he wanted to go over his options and figure out which plan was right for him. We walked through three possible options:

    • Option 1: Full upper and full lower dentures.
    • Option 2: Upper and lower All-on-X implant prosthetics.
    • Option 3: Full upper denture with a lower All-on-X.

We explained the pros and cons of each, including cost, comfort, and what life would look like with each choice. John decided on Option 3. It gave him a secure lower implant solution without the frustration of a full lower denture, and it left the door open to upgrade his upper arch later if he wanted.

      Planning and Diagnostics

Before starting treatment, we gathered detailed records — photos, 3D scans, and a CBCT — to map everything out. Working with our prosthetics lab, we designed surgical guides and planned every step with both function and aesthetics in mind. This gave John confidence that the results would look natural and feel right.

      The Surgical Process

On surgery day, John was kept comfortable with oral sedation and local anesthetic. From there, the process included:

      • Removing the remaining lower teeth and carefully cleaning the sockets.
      • Using stackable guides to ensure the implants were placed at the exact right angle and depth.
      • Leveling the bone and preparing it for stability.
      • Placing the implants and abutments with precision.
      • Attaching a temporary lower prosthesis made through our in-house lab.

Afterward, John went home with clear instructions and came back for regular check-ins as he healed.

      Healing and Temporary Prosthetics

John’s recovery went smoothly. He came to his 24-hour and 1-week visits, then returned monthly. After about three months, we removed the surgical prosthesis and tried in a new lower PMMA prosthesis along with an upper denture. He wore these for several weeks, giving him time to adjust and let us fine-tune the details before moving forward with his finals.

      Final Results

At the end of treatment, John received a brand new full milled upper denture and a lower implant-supported zirconia bridge. The difference was immediate. He finally had a customized, natural-looking “Hollywood” smile, and the peace of mind that his teeth would not let him down.

John’s Perspective and His “Competition” Among Friends

One of John’s favorite parts of the process was joking with his two friends who were going through their own dental journeys at the same time.

      • One friend chose traditional full dentures. To this day, he still can’t wear his lower denture comfortably.
      • The other friend went through implants at another office but has struggled with failures and frustration.

John often laughs about how it became a “friendly competition,” and he’s grateful he chose iHeart Dental. His results have been stable and reliable — and he’s been smiling ever since.

Two Years Later – A Lasting Smile

Now, more than two years later, John is still happy with his decision. His lower implant bridge continues to feel solid, and his upper denture works just fine for him. He hasn’t felt the need to upgrade to an upper All-on-X, and he’s content knowing the option is there if he ever changes his mind.
